Awards celebrate our shining stars

Posted on Fri, 02/11/2018

Dedicated NHS staff at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust were recognised for the difference they have made to patients’ lives over the last year at the hospital’s annual Star Awards.

Winners were announced in 12 categories celebrating commitment, innovation and excellence in patient care.

This year’s winner of the special QE Gateshead Angel Award, nominated by members of the public, was housekeeper, Tracey Dellow.

The QE sees around 300,000 outpatients and 120,000 emergency patients each year and heartfelt nominations flooded in from those keen to thank staff working in the hospital and the community for going the extra mile, from nurses and porters, to volunteers and reception staff.

Gently wiping away their tears after the heartache of losing a baby, sitting by their bedside to ensure they were never alone during their final days, and thoughtful touches such as remembering their favourite meal, were among the reasons people came forward with their moving stories.

Tracey was nominated by the daughter of a patient on Ward 9 to thank her for her thoughtfulness and the support she provided her dad during the last few weeks of his life and the way she comforted the family during an extremely difficult time.

Tracey also visits the hospital chapel every day to light a candle for patients on the ward and ensures any birthdays get a special mention on the hospital radio.

Tracey first joined QE Gateshead 13 years ago as a domestic assistant and has worked as a housekeeper for eight years. She said: “I was very surprised to be nominated for the award and even more shocked to win.

“The hardest part of my job is losing a patient and so it was very emotional to hear from the family that I had helped in some way during this difficult time - that would have been enough of a prize in itself.

“I enjoy being able to chat to the patients on the ward and help to look after their families.  There is a great team on Ward 9 and this award is for them too."

L-R: Dr Cecilia McKee, consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology; Susan Watson, director of strategy and transformation; Tracey Dellow, housekeeper Ward 9, and Amy Patterson, operating department practitioner.

Runners-up for the award were Dr Cecilia McKee, consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology, and Amy Patterson, operating department practitioner, who were both praised for their warm and caring approach.

Acting chief executive of the trust, John Maddison, said: “We know that our staff can often make the key difference to our patients’ NHS experience and we wanted to reward some of our very own Gateshead Angels as part of our annual staff awards.

“The moving nominations we received from patients showed what a fantastic job they are doing in often challenging circumstances and we are delighted to see our staff recognised in this way.

“It is also a great chance to celebrate the wide range of roles that all contribute to the effective delivery of services across the NHS and shine a light on our often hidden heroes who are touching people’s lives every day.”
